Adverse events in thyroid surgery: observational study in three surgical units with high volume/year

Abstract Background Thyroid surgery, performed for benign or malignant pathologies, is one of the most frequently procedures and its frequency has even been increasing in recent years. Postoperative bleeding, recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy, associated to dysphonia, dysphagia, dyspnea, hypoparathyroidism represent fearful common complications. We conducted a multicenter, observational study retrospectively collected data three high-volume referral centers, enrolling all patients undergone thyroid surgery between January 2016 December 2017 Parma University Hospital, Cagliari Hospital Ferrara Hospital. Materials Patients were divided into five groups, differentiated carcinoma, medullary non-toxic pathology, hyperfunctioning pathology NIFTP (Non-invasive Follicular neoplasm with Papillary-like nuclear features). A follow up at 7 30 days was executed, evaluating onset paresthesia, dysphonia dysphagia. 6-month follow-up cases early Results Totally, 1252 eligible study: 907 female 345 male, male ratio 2.6:1 an average age 53.428. Total thyroidectomy 1022 cases, lobectomy 230. After 6 months we recorded paresthesia 0.5%, 1.8% dysphagia 0.5%. Conclusion Our confirms once again that share morbidity escapes possibilities prediction control by operator, depending on patient anamnestic, pathological anatomical factors.
